Companionship can always be found at the Motley, a student-run coffee house that serves as a combination library/hangout/performance space. The school fosters an intimate community with campus traditions such as weekly teas every Wednesday that are well attended by professors and candlelight dinners four times a year. The most popular majors at Scripps include psychology, politics, and biology/life sciences, and they all do a senior thesis or project before graduating. Students can take classes at any of the schools within the consortium, which also share clubs and athletic teams, and they have easy access to plenty of co-ed parties. In effect, the roughly 1,000 students who attend Scripps enjoy resources and facilities that are the equivalent of a much larger, co-ed university. Scripps itself is tiny, but it benefits from being one of the five undergraduate institutions in the consortium of Claremont Colleges, a cluster of schools 35 miles from Los Angeles.
